Flying Fifteens are challenging, fast hiking boats, which plane downwind, and allow dry self righting (if necessary!). Datchet’s Flying 15’s have their own fleet start every Sunday morning (2 races, with the first one starting at 10.25) and join the club handicap fleet start for Wednesday evening races in the summer.
The Flying 15 fleet at Datchet is approximately 30 boats strong, sailed by a good humoured, enthusiastic, multi-aged group, covering a wide range of sailing abilities from world championship contenders to new sailors. The fleet enjoys a strong social scene, principally based on having lunch together in the bar after racing – with the occasional good natured exchange of views on rules and manoeuvres. Helms and crews often mix when their regulars are ‘otherwise engaged’ and the fleet match-making service means it is easy for newcomers to get sailing with an experienced helm or crew and to get to know people quickly.
The fleet organises social events, prize-givings, the annual Fleet Championships and an annual Open Meeting, Datchet is also host for the Flying Fifteen National Mid-Winter Championships and are often joined by boats from the south coast clubs over the winter.
The club also has 2 club owned boats, which are available for trial sails and for hire while you are looking for your own boat. Flying 15’s are rugged, long lasting boats which can be competitive for very long periods and for those who want an elegant wooden boat or are working under a tighter budget there are separate “older” boat categories for Classics and Silvers which have an adjusted handicap and can compete strongly inland. There is a healthy second-hand market and there are plenty of experienced sailors in the fleet who are very willing to advise on buying and helping new owners get the most out of their boats.
To get started, contact Mike or Mike (below), or even better, come along to the club on a Sunday morning to see for yourself how friendly we are. In the meantime, whet your appetite by having a look at the blog and the various posts on the website.
