Wednesday Evening Series Race Officer Notes
Guidelines for Race Officers
- One start for all. Usual 5,4,1,go signal format.
- Consider the number of boats when setting the line – probably longer than a Sunday
start line.
- You can do start recalls if necessary (although bear in mind the need to get finished
before it gets dark).
- The start line is also a gate and finish line to allow fair handicap calculations.
- It is best to set the course in the clubhouse after checking out the wind on the
water. (use a whiteboard pen or the magnetic markers on the map above the signing
on sheets)
- Please do not set a course that crosses itself (e.g. Figure of eight) as this can
be dangerous when fast boats with spinnakers flying meet slower boats.
- Courses with at least three turning marks are preferable.
- Do use moveable inflatable buoys at every mark to make the course as clear as possible;
you may need to help & encourage the safety boat cox’n to start this early.
- Shorter courses can be fun and are more flexible if the wind drops.
- Aim to finish the slowest boat before it gets dark.
- Sailwave allows us to use a corrected lap-time handicap system so expect to use this.
Further advice is provided in the Wednesday Evening Race Officers manual which should
also be available in the Club Events Race Box.
