RYA Onboard Scheme

Working in partnership with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), Datchet Water SC is proud to promote the RYA Onboard Scheme, which aims to introduce as many young people to the sport of sailing as possible. Working under the OB scheme, Datchet Water SC is able to offer schools, scout groups, youth groups and all youth organisations the opportunity to try sailing as either a taster session lasting two hours, a day session or a course set out over six weeks.
To assist with promoting sailing to all schools and youth organisations / organisations, the RYA have appointed an “Onboard Development Officer” who is a point of contact for any organisers wishing to make any enquires about sailing opportunities. Representing the Thames Valley and surrounding areas, Tim Anderton is available to visit schools and organisations to provide information for teachers, organisers, group leaders, parents and potential young sailors. Tim can be contacted on 07585505882 or by email at tim.anderton@rya.org.uk.
As a sailing Club, we employ a team of fully qualified and experienced RYA Instructors who have all undergone a Criminal Reference Bureau (CRB) check, undergone training in the Club Standard Operating Procedures and have a passion for sailing and the development of young people. We provide all the latest equipment including suitable sailing dinghies for the sessions, new wet suits, buoyancy aids and waterproof spray tops.
All sailors must bring with them their own swimming costume / shorts, dry clothing, trainers or shoes that can get wet and a towel. We have large spacious changing rooms with hot showers that can accommodate large group sizes and store personal clothing during the sessions.
OB Taster Sessions
Our taster sessions are the perfect way for a group to experience sailing for the first time without signing up to full length course. Also, it will give organisers the opportunity to experience the sailing session, equipment involved, the instructors and the sailing club facilities to decide if they wish to continue with a sailing course.
For the sailors, our team of qualified instructors will provide clear instruction enabling all participants the opportunity to helm their own boat and a full safety service that fulfils all RYA standards. All two-hour taster sessions can be booked at a time of day to suit the group and after school times can easily be catered for.
Cost:
£10 per person based on a group of 6 (min) to 8 (max)
Total number of groups per session = 3
OB Day Taster Session
For groups wanting to gain a more extensive experience of sailing, our day sessions are the perfect way to get out onto the water and try sailing at a more relaxed and comprehensive pace. Starting at 10:00 and finishing at 3:00pm.
The day can be broken down into a morning and afternoon session with a break for lunch using the Clubs catering facilities (please call the Club to discuss any catering arrangements you may require prior to the session).
At the end of the day, all sailors will be able to leave the session with the experience of helming their own boat, understanding the basic elements of sailing and with the drive to continue with the sport. Certificates of attendance will also be issued to each young sailor.
All day sessions can be organised any day of the week to suit individual group needs.
Cost:
£20 per person based on a group of 6 (min to 8 (max)
Total number of groups per session = 3
OB Six Week Course
For groups who have already experienced sailing and would like to gain a sailing qualification under the youth scheme, our six-week programme is the perfect way to develop the skills of sailing. Each week, groups can attend a two-hour session and work through the various elements of the sailing syllabus and benefit from the development of other skills such as team work, communication and social interaction. Our team of instructors will guide each sailor through the six week programme with clear session goals and logging of progression.
At the end of the six weeks, sailors will be awarded an RYA certificate at the Stage of their sailing.
Sailors who also participate in the session will have the opportunity to join the Sailing Club as a junior “Cadet” member and benefit from boat hire, youth social events and our own 20kt Squad.
Cost:
£60 per person based on a group of six
Total number of groups per session = 4
