RS 500’s @ Datchet
As of the 1st March 2010 there were 12 RS 500’s owned by the members of Datchet Water Sailing Club. This either makes us the biggest two person dinghy class at the club or, at this rate of growth, we soon will be. Over 300 of these boats have been built by RS since 2006 which means about 5 % are at this club.

The RS 500 is a modern single trapeze, asymmetric spinnaker dinghy aimed at fairly light weight crews but with plenty of space to take heavier people for club racing. Club members are currently sailing them with between 16 and 26 stone on board. The class is promoted nationally as a Youth boat, but so far the Datchet fleet are mainly in their 20’s and 30’s. The design makes the RS 500 an ideal first trapeze boat for developing sailors, while the renowned RS national circuit gives plenty of scope for progression for the competitive amongst us.
The RS 500 is an ideal boat for this club and Datchet Water Sailing Club has the ideal stretch of water for the boat. In many ways it is the modern equivalent of the Laser 2, which in the early 1990’s, had a fleet of 100 boats at the club with at least 15 boats racing every Sunday. Therefore Datchet Water Sailing Club is actively promoting the RS 500 as the fleet of choice for people who want one design racing in a single trapeze class.
For more information on the RS 500 fleet at Datchet please contact Mike Clapp, Fleet Captain, on 01494 522619 or rs500@dwsc.co.uk (the one at the back in the photo).
