The JYS autumn term will revolve around the following programme, which is subject to change:
Session 1 - Sunday 6th September 2009 - 1:30 to 4:30 pm
Introductions, shakedown session, skill assessments and group allocations. At the end of the session, all JYS members will have the opportunity to demonstrate their sailing skills to the race instructors, who will be able to establish the beginners / intermediate squad and the advance squad.
Beginner / intermediate who have recently completed their RYA Stage 3 and 4 sailing courses will race train in the Clubs fleet of Topaz’s.
Advance sailors who have achieved their Stage 4 and have at least one years race training experiences will have the opportunity to be selected for the Topper or Vive squad
Session 2 - Sunday 13th September 2009 - 1:30 to 4:30 pm
Beginners / intermediates squad will be trained in upwind sailing / beating to a windward mark, effective tacking and top mark rounding
Advance Topper / Vibe squad will train in upwind sailing / beating focusing on specific boat set up, control line settings and boat handling techniques. Roll tacking to maintaining speed will also be developed to ensure the best techniques are established when racing. Once at the top mark, specific training will focus on correct mark rounding techniques and tactics
Session 3 - Sunday 20 September 2009 - 1:30 to 4:30 pm
Beginner / intermediate squad will be introduced to the start line and race starting procedures including flags, countdowns and line biases. A series of exercises will be put into practice to allow all racers to experience a race start and develop various starting methods.
Advance Topper / Vibe squad will also develop their race starting skills using various sizes of lines and biases to simulate big fleet starts and to encourage clear air starts. Using various exercises put in place by the race instructors, this session will give the sailors the knowledge, experience and courage to push for the line and get the best start when racing.
Session 4 - Sunday 27 September 2009 - 1:30 to 4:30 pm
Beginner / intermediate squad will focus on the downwind leg of the racecourse with training in specific skills including reaching to a wing mark, gybing on the mark and running downwind.
Advance Topper / Vibe fleet will also follow the same downwind training theme with the focus on specific boat set up, control line settings and boat handling techniques. The race instructor will break the session down into specific areas to allow skills to be developed and put into practice. Training for the Vibe fleet will also include the use of the asymmetric spinnaker.
Session 5 - Sunday 4th October 2009 - 1:30 to 4:30 pm
Progress at Session 5 will mean that the beginner / intermediate squad will have experience sailing around a triangular race course. This is now the ideal time to discuss and demonstrate the use of lay-lines, race tactics and The Rules of Racing, which can be applied to race course.
For the advanced Topper / Vibe squad, lay-lines, race tactics and The Rules of Racing will also be reviewed and applied to the various racecourses sailed at Club and National level. At the end of this session, all advanced sailors will be encouraged to participate in the Sunday morning Club racing events as a means of demonstrating and practicing their skills on the course.
Session 6 - Sunday 11 October 2009 - 1:30 to 4:30 pm
Regatta Day
All squads will have the opportunity to take part in the JYS end of term regatta and compete against each other to come first over the line. With separate starts for the Topaz and Topper / Vibe fleet, all JYS members will be required to demonstrate their skills developed over the last five weeks before the start of the winter season
Parents and adult Club members are more than welcome to take part and particpate in the racing (using the same fleet as the JYS members), which will allow a range of different short races to be put in place including a fun race at the end of the day.
All JYS sessions will still cost £5 per session and any junior member requiring a club boat will also need to pay £5 per session to cover the use of the boat. All JYS members will be required to sign up to the six session term programme in advance and make a payment of £30 or £60 if requiring a Club boat. Advance payment is necessary to ensure regular attendance and will also allow Club boats to be reserved for each session.
This will be the last session of the term with the beginner / intermediate fleet breaking up for the winter. The advanced Topper and Vibe fleet with have the opportunity to take part in the winter training programme - details to follow soon.
