Instructors Updates and News
All instructors must understand and follow the policies that will be put in place from the 1 July 2009.
Under 18 Helmet Policy
All Under 18 sailors will be required to wear a safety helmet provided by the Club unless they:
o Are certified to RYA Stage 3 and above
o Not participating in an RYA training course or Club coaching session
o Sailing under the supervision of their parent / guardian in their own boat
The instructor(s) running the course or the Senior Instructor supervising the session(s) may decided it is necessary for all under 18 sailors to wear safety helmets regardless of the ability or certification of the sailor(s)
All beginner adults taking part in an RYA training course or Club Coaching session will be advised to wear a helmet if they wish to do so. If a beginner adult does not wish to use a helmet, they must be warned of the inherent risks involved whilst sailing.
Any sailor wishing to use their own safety helmet must ensure that equipment is certified with a CE mark and suit for water-based usage.
Foot Wear Policy
All employed staff (either paid or voluntary) must ensure that they protect their feet using appropriate footwear when operating on the dinghies, beach, pontoons, boat shed and when moving boats (either sail or power).
Appropriate footwear may be:
o Old trainers
o Dinghy / wet suit boots
o Sailing Wellington boots
o Aqua shoes
Footwear such as flip-flops and open sandals that offer no protection to the toes and top of the feet must not be used unless in areas not detailed above.
Mast Head Policy
All double-handed dinghies participating in an RYA Training Course must be fitted with a fully-inflated Crewsaver Mast Head float.
Double-handed dinghies hired or used for cruising are not required to be fitted with a masthead float. However, the sailors should be advised of the benefits associated with a masthead float and must be advised of actions to be taken to avoid an inversion.
