Fulham Prep School RYA Stage 3 Training Programme

 

All students training towards their RYA Stage 3 will follow the programmed detailed below.  Parents can use this programme to identify the elements covered in each session and follow the progress of their sailors.

 

Session 1 - 05/09/09

 

Land-based section

 

Boat identification

Rigging demonstration

Use of the boat trolley  and knots to secure the boat

Awareness of hazards - natural and man-made

Methods of identfing wind direction and strength

Identification of personal buoyancy and clothing

Understands what to do with wet suit, buoyancy aid and waterproof after use

 

Water-based Section

 

Launching with assistance from the instructor

Steering controls

Sheeting controls

Slowing down and stopping

Tacking

Landing with assistance from the instructor

 

Session 2 - 12/09/09

 

Land-based Section

 

Wind strength and identification - when to reef

Rigging under supervision

Securing the boat to the trolley

Signals to use when calling for assistance

Importance of telling someone you are going afloat

Understands the dangers of sailing in close-quarters to other boats

Understands the dangers of hypothermia

Understands ports vs starboard, windward boat and overtaking boat

Tacking

Gybing

Points of sail

Can fit own buoyancy aid and wet suit

Knows where to store all the kit after use

 

Water-based Section

 

Launching from the beach / pontoon under supervision from the instructor

Steering whilst under tow

Reaching around two marker buoys

Understands what to do when in distress

Tacking

Gybing (from a training run)

Landing under supervision from  the instructor

 

Session 3 - 19/09/09

 

Land-based Section

 

Identification of hull, spares, foils, rigs and control lines

Wind identification and the use of the Beaufort Wind Scale including sources of weather forecasts

Boat rigging to suit wind strength and direction

Use of the five essentials

Coming alongside a moored powerboat

Picking up a mooring buoy

Can fit own buoyancy aid and wet suit

Tacking upwind, controlling speed and getting out of irons

Kit correctly packed away and stored in the correct location

Wet suits, buoyancy aids and waterproofs correctly washed and returned

 

Water-based Section

 

Launching under supervision from the instructor - beach and / or pontoon

Preparing for a tow

Tacking upwind

Sailing to windward - use of a triangular course

Speed control

Getting out of irons

Coming alongside a moored powerboat

Picking up a mooring buoy

Landing under supervision from the instructor - beach and / or pontoon

 

Session 4 - 26/09/09

 

Land-based Section

 

Boat controls

Understands windward, leeward, bear away, luff up

Rigging and reefing if required

Man overboard recovery

Understands basic aerodynamic theory

Capsize recovery

Kit correctly packed away and stored in the correct location

Wet suits, buoyancy aids and waterproof correctly washed and returned

 

Water-based Section

Launching under the supervision of the instructor

Tacking and boat balance

Use of boat controls

Sailing around a triangular course

Landing under the supervision of the instructor
