Do you want close class racing, in a challenging, fast hiking boat, which planes downwind, but allows dry self righting?? The Flying 15 fleet at Datchet is for you!
The fleet is a good humoured, enthusiastic, multi-aged group, which enjoys a strong social scene, principally based on having lunch together after racing.
The fleet is a self-contained group within the club, which organises social events, prizegivings, the annual Fleet Championships and the Open Meeting. From January 2009, the club will be the host for the National Winter Championships. The fleet has grown in 5 years from 10 to 20+ boats at DWSC. Winter visitors put the numbers above 30.
The Flying 15 s a 20’ planing keelboat designed by Uffa Fox for racing. They are well sorted, rugged, long lasting boats which can be competitive for very long periods. Charles Apthorp can still win Open Meetings in 3271 built in 1989. There are separate “old” boat categories for hull numbers under 2700 (Classics) and under 3400 (Silvers) – and these boats can be picked up in a healthy second-hand market on the class website and even E-bay.
Datchet’s Flying 15’s fleet race each and every Sunday morning 10.30 and (hopefully) 12.00 starts, and in the single start Wednesday pm races.
How do you start?
The club has 2 club owned boats, which are available for trials sails. Also club members are always available to offer trial sails crewing or helming in their own boats. Advice on buying, rigging and sailing is always available – often at the gybe mark!
