New Format Fleet Championships – 12th March and 18th June

For 2017 the Sailing Committee has decided to try a new format for the Club Fleet Championships.  For all the fleets other than the Cats the Championship will be sailed over two Sundays which fit in the club calendar between the Club Sunday Series.  The dates are Sunday 12th March and Sunday 18th June.  During the first event we will have the prize-giving for the Winter Series and during the second the prizes for the Spring Series will be presented.

On both Sundays there are four races scheduled in the standard Sunday morning format (the race officer has a choice of five different courses).  There will probably be two races back to back in the morning then two further races in the afternoon, but the Race Officer may decide to make more of them back to back if the conditions warrant it.  There is quite a generous discard rate (4 out of 8 to count) so people who can’t make both Sunday’s or the afternoons stand some chance of winning.

There will be a briefing at 9.45 on both mornings.

The Notice of Race for this event has been published here.

Duty Roster 2017-2018

Dear Members,

We are delighted to tell you that you can now access the Datchet Water Sailing Club Dutyman Roster for 2017-2018. This year you can now select the dates you wish to your duties. If you would like to roster yourself with sailing partners/fleets, then best hurry as it will be on a first come first serve basis.

This has been requested by many members so that you can avoid the need to duty swap, and you can also see the events that we have on, should you wish to assist with one of them.

If your duty choice is Race Team for an event, we would request that you consider doing both days. The race officers find this to be most helpful.

So hurry, get in there and make your choices, and fingers crossed that it all goes well.

Duty spaces are available from 01 April onwards. We will allocate members duties after 01 March, so please spend a couple of minutes picking the duties that work with your calendar.

If you have any questions or problems with allocating yourselves onto duties, please give us a ring at the club. Or email sailing@dwsc.co.uk with the subject ‘Roster’.

To allocate your duty please login to your Dutyman account and click volunteer for a duty.

Thanks,

Whats On at the Club this Weekend?

Dear Members,

The wind is looking great here at the club this weekend. It would be great to see all of you on the water.

This Sunday’s Racing we have Tristan Beckett  as your Race Officer and on Safety will be Tom Hayes.

We have some of our Instructors doing come catamaran sailing this weekend in preparation for their up and coming RYA Multihull Instructor Conversion course. Lets hope the wind is up how it should be so they get some fun hanging out on the wire.

Rules Evening

We had a very successful rules evening hosted by Chris Simon on the evening of the 25th January. With over 40 people attending and a great Chilli made by Sebastian, it was a great night for all. If you have a topic of interest or anything that interests you, please talk to Gabrielle and we will get an evening booked in and planned.

Duty Roster

Just to give you all a heads up, you will all receive an email next week regarding your duty allocation for 2017/2018. The dates will start from 1/04/2017. You will be given a requested time to select and roster yourself for your own duties. This email will be going out on Wednesday.

Last Night’s Rules Evening

Thank you to Chris Simons for hosting last night’s rules evening. There was a great turnout. A big thank you to Sebastian Camisuli for making a great Chilli ably assisted by George Hoskins who served with “Burrell”esque, panache that went down well with all the club members, also to Helen Beecham for helping with the setup.

It was really great to see so many members getting to know each other and to know that more people now understand the rules.

The main aim of the evening was for Chris to make us all aware of the new changes that had been made since the start of the new edition and to help us to expand our knowledge on the most important rules. It was clear that everyone had learnt at least one thing from the evening.

There will be more evenings like this to follow. If you have a story to tell (or know somebody who does), or have a discussion topic, let Gabrielle know and we will get it organised.

‘You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else’

Thanks,

Tristan

Help Datchet win the Sailjuice TopClub Prize (and £300)!!!

DWSC is currently lying 2nd overall in the GJW Sailjuice TopClub competition – and has a chance to claim the top spot with a prize of £300 provided enough Datchet boats enter the last two rounds (the Tiger Trophy on 4/5 Feb and the Oxford Blue on 18 Feb).

So far, there have been strong Datchet performances from Andrew Snell in his Supernova (currently 3rd overall), Ralph & Sophie Singleton (14th overall in RS 800), Ben Iliffe & Paddy Lewis (22nd overall in 505), and Serega Samus (50th overall in Musto Skiff), with Nick Charles contributing a 13th place at the Datchet Flyer (RS 200). Congratulations to all of them and the others that have represented DWSC so far.

With 3 club entrants in each round being needed to qualify, Andrew and Ben need more Datchet boats to join them at Rutland for the Tiger Trophy, as the Singletons and others may not be able to attend. Please give your wetsuit or drysuit a ring-out to help the club stand on the podium at the Dinghy Show. More support would also be welcome at the Oxford Blue (18 Feb) which might just help Datchet get the top spot. See the following link for the TopClub results and details on how to enter.
