Fulham Prep School RYA Stage 2 Training Programme

 

All students training towards their RYA Stage 2 will follow the programmed detailed below.  Parents can use this programme to identify the elements covered in each session and follow the progress of their sailors.

 

Session 1 - 05/09/09

 

Land-based section

 

Boat identification

Rigging demonstration

Use of the boat trolley

Awareness of hazards - natural and man-made including overhead power cables

Wind aware

Identification of personal buoyancy and clothing

Understands what to do with wet suit, buoyancy aid and waterproof after use

 

Water-based Section

 

Launching with assistance from the instructor

Steering controls

Sheeting controls

Slowing down and stopping

Tacking

Landing with assistance from the instructor

 

Session 2 - 12/09/09

 

Land-based Section

 

Methods of identification wind direction

Rigging practice

Securing the boat to the trolley using a round turn and two half hitches

Signals to use when calling for assistance

Telling someone that you are going afloat

Ports vs starboard rule

Tacking drill and getting out of irons

Understands the no-go-zone

Can fit own buoyancy aid and wet suit

Knows where to store all the kit after use

 

Water-based Section

 

Launching under supervision from the instructor

Steering whilst under tow

Reaching around two marker buoys

Understands what to do when in distress

Tacking

Capsize recovery

Landing under supervision from the instructor

 

Session 3 - 19/09/09

 

Land-based Section

 

Identification of hull, spars, foils and rigging

Wind awareness

Boat rigging

Can fit own buoyancy aid and wet suit

Gybe demonstration

Methods of launching and landing from the beach and pontoons

The Five Essentials

Kit correctly packed away and stored in the correct location

Wet suits, buoyancy aids and waterproofs correctly washed and returned

 

Water-based Section

 

Launching from the pomtoon with assistance from the instructor

Preparing for a tow

Tacking close reach to close reach

Speed control

Getting out of irons

Gybing (optional)

Landing with assistance from the instructor

 

Session 4 - 26/09/09

 

Land-based Section

 

Weather forecasts and wind strengths

Understands terms such as windward, leeward and gybe

Rope work - reef knot

Tacking and boat balance

Boat controls

Boat rigging

Kit correctly packed away and stored in the correct location

Wet suits, buoyancy aids and waterproof correctly washed and returned

 

Water-based Section

Launching under the supervision of the instructor

Tacking and boat balance

Use of boat controls

Sailing around a shallow course

Landing under the supervision of the instructor
