Fulham Prep School RYA Stage 4 Training Programme
All students training towards their RYA Stage 4 will follow the programmed detailed below. Parents can use this programme to identify the elements covered in each session and follow the progress of their sailors.
Session 1 - 05/09/09

Boat identification
Assist with rigging
Use of the boat trolley
Awareness of hazards - natural and man-made
Wind awareness and the use of the Beaufort Sclae
Tacking drills

Identification of personal buoyancy and clothing

Session 2 - 12/09/09
Land-based Section
Sources of weather information and current wind conditions - use of weather charts
Rigging under supervision - recommendation from instructor for reefing
Securing the boat to the trolley
Signals to use when calling for assistance
Jib controls and the use of tale-tails
Gybing drills
Five essentials
Can fit own buoyancy aid and wet suit
Knows where to store all the kit after use

Launching under supervision from the instructor
Steering whilst under tow
Reaching around two marker buoys
Understands what to do when in distress

Identification of hull, foils, spars, rigs and centreboard / daggerboard
Wind awareness and tides (ebbs and floods)
Rigging under supervision
Can fit own buoyancy aid and wet suit
Tacking, controlling speed and getting out of irons
Rope work - round turn and two half hitches, reef knot, bowline, clove hitch, rolling hitch and sheet bend
Kit correctly packed away and stored in the correct location
Wet suits, buoyancy aids and waterproofs correctly washed and returned

Launching from the beach and pontoon under supervision from the instructor
Preparing for a tow
Tacking and gybing
Speed control
Getting out of irons
Boat recovery from total inversion - full supervision from the instructor
Landing with assistance from the instructor

Coming alongside a moored powerboat
Picking up a mooring buoy
